During the Battle of Neuve Chapelle which was fought between 10th-12th March 1915, 3rd Division which included 56th Field Company of the Royal Engineers, were holding the line further north at Spanbroekmolen. Believing that the Germans were sending troops from the Ypres area to reinforce around Neuve Chapelle, British GHQ ordered 7 Brigade to attack to stop further transfers.  At 2.30pm on 12th March the attack went in but the bombardment that preceded it had been inadequate and the wire was not cut.  The attack foundered and both 3rd Worcestershire and 1st Wiltshire,  the two attacking battalions supported by 56th Field Company,  lost heavily with nothing to show for their sacrificial efforts. One of those killed was William Moran of 56th Field Company.
